Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
Step Eleven acknowledges and explores the importance of our spiritual relationship. The Twelve Steps are a spiritual journey of recovery that began when we came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. Here we make that spiritual connection our specific focus. Our purpose is to develop and improve our understanding of, and our communication with, our Higher Power, and to be willing to follow this spiritual guidance.
Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with our Higher Power so that we can deepen this very personal relationship with a Power greater than ourselves. It is our responsibility to seek, establish, and improve this connection. The terms «prayer» and «meditation» are used to represent our spiritual interaction with our Higher Power, the communication of speaking and listening. These can also be times of peace and quiet from which serenity, courage, and wisdom can arise.
Members have described how they experience a conscious awareness of a Higher Power in various ways. The understanding could range from a deliberate design to a grand mystery; from traditional religious situations to inspiring natural settings; from exchanges with one’s sponsor or group, to times of solitude and reflection; from «epiphany moments,» to intriguing «coincidences.» Each member discovers and determines her or his own spiritual path.

Praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out enables us to fulfill a higher purpose and not to be confused or led by the luring impulses of our addiction or our character defects. We seek the wisdom to know the difference between attitudes and actions that follow our spiritual principles and those that have kept us bound up in a form of insanity—doing the same things over and over and expecting different results.
Nicotine Anonymous has three conference approved prayers: the Serenity Prayer, the Third Step Prayer, and the Seventh Step Prayer. In their personal practices, members are also encouraged to use other prayers, affirmations, or meditations with which they are familiar and comfortable.
